Background
Battery Centre Gothenburg is the result of a dedicated effort to strengthen Sweden’s industrial competitiveness in battery technology, electrification, and sustainable production. The initiative was born from the rapid technological advancements in electrification, which present both opportunities and challenges for the industry.
To meet the growing demand for specialized expertise, Västra Götaland Region, the City of Gothenburg, the Gothenburg Region, and Business Region Göteborg joined forces to establish a training and development center that supports businesses, educational institutions, and professionals in this transition.

Investing in the future skill development in the region
Battery Centre Gothenburg is a strategic investment ensuring that Western Sweden — and Sweden as a whole — remains at the forefront of sustainable industrial development. Supported by Västra Götaland Region, the City of Gothenburg, the Gothenburg Region, and Business Region Göteborg, the center is designed as a long-term commitment to skills development, innovation, and sustainability.
By bringing together experts, educators, and businesses under one roof, Battery Centre Gothenburg fosters a dynamic environment where future technologies can be developed and implemented. The center is an essential part of the region’s green transition and a driving force for both local and international collaborations in electrification and battery technology.
The Need for Skills and Collaboration
Electrification and battery technology have quickly become essential to the future of industry, and Sweden has a unique opportunity to take a leading role in this field. Västra Götaland, particularly Gothenburg, has long been a hub for the automotive and manufacturing industries, with global players like Volvo and a strong research and innovation environment. However, one of the biggest challenges in the transition is workforce competence — without the right knowledge and technical skills, growth could stall.
Through discussions with industry leaders, the education sector, and public stakeholders, it became clear that a coordinated initiative was needed. Battery Centre Gothenburg was established to create a platform where industry, academia, and the public sector can collaborate to develop and share the expertise required for the electrified society of the future.

Who is it for?
Battery Centre Gothenburg serves a broad audience:
Professionals looking to upskill in battery technology and sustainable production.
Students at secondary, vocational, and university levels who want to specialize in this field.
Companies and organizations seeking training for employees or collaboration in research and innovation.
Adults looking to transition into careers in green technology and the battery sector.
Battery Centre Gothenburg is not just a resource for local and regional industry needs but also a platform for international collaboration and knowledge-sharing. With Gothenburg emerging as a leading hub for sustainable technology, the center plays a vital role in shaping the future of industrial development.
Collaboration — from idea to reality
Battery Centre Gothenburg is a collaboration between leading industrial companies, research institutes, and educational organizations. By combining cutting-edge expertise with international and regional partnerships, the center is set to become a key driver in preparing a highly skilled workforce for Europe’s transition to electrified and sustainable industries.

A modern education hub is definitely not built without great collaboration. We account that more that we have had more than a 100 different organisations that have helped us develop and create the top modern education centre that is Battery Centre Gothenburg.

An operational project team with broad experience
The core team behind the development of the training center brought together a broad range of knowledge and experience, ensuring a strong foundation for the project. Many of whom continue to play a key role in running the center following its opening in January 2025.
The project group included specialists from various fields, such as a project manager, an operations manager, a UX designer, and several trainers with expertise in automation, maintenance, and battery technology. Their combined skills and industry insights were instrumental in shaping a cutting-edge learning environment tailored to the needs of the evolving industrial sector.

We opened the doors January 2025
Europe’s most modern training center for industrial technology, electromobility, and the green transition was inaugurated on January 24, 2025. The event highlighted the importance of skills development, with representatives from the municipality and region cutting the ribbon. Visitors toured the center, experienced the training environment firsthand, and were introduced to the learning stations by staff and enthusiastic high school students from seven Teknikcollege-certified schools.

Invest in Gothenburg writes about the opening
“Battery Centre Gothenburg will help ensure that we have the right skills for the major transition that is taking place. These skills are central to ensuring that Gothenburg and West Sweden remain leaders in battery and automotive expertise in the future,” says Anna-Lena Johansson, responsible for skills provision in the battery and automotive industries at Business Region Gothenburg.

The start of something great
All parties met in early January 2024 for the start-up meeting, where representatives from Arbetsmarknad- och vuxenutbildnings förvaltningen, the City of Gothenburg, the Västra Götaland Region, the Gothenburg Region, Technical College, Business Region Gothenburg as well as Volvo Cars, Volvo Group and NOVO Energy met to talk about the next steps.
